HOW TO SURVIVE IF YOU ARE A DESIGNER THAT HAS JUST MOVED TO LONDON,
LOOKING FOR CONTACTS: EVENTS

IDEAS PARA SOBREVIVIR SI ERES DISEÑADOR Y TE VAS A LONDRES A BUSCARTE LA VIDA (III), BUSCANDO CONTACTOS: EVENTOS

Like in other times before I will speak about some of the tricks that have helped me to survive after moving to a new country. Normally I use to write these kind of posts only in Spanish but this time I consider that the topic at hand can be generalized to a wider audience, that's why I decided to posted it in English as well.

It's well known that contacts are essential everywhere you go. Whether if you just arrived to London or you are already settled down here you must work and expand your circle of professional friends everyday.

London is a great city that offers thousands of design activities each day, so many that sometimes it's impossible to find out about them in time. The best thing to do is to keep up looking at the different options to choose the best and try to not saturate your schedule and actually enjoy the little free time that you usually have in this city. A part from work, this could be maybe the only way of meeting your peers and share with them your interest in design.

Focusing on performing this task you must pay a lot of attention to the network. Since I've been here I've learned that everything, absolutely everything, moves online… If you want to attend any activity you must be clever to get tickets (free or otherwise) ASAP: exhibition,  galleries and studio openings, lectures, talks, workshops, etc.. There are so many people who want to attend that if you're not fast enough you won't be able to attend to anything.

Here are some tips that are working well for me:

- Create lists on twitter to whom you want to follow - they don't have to be public if you don't want. It's a great way to have a quick look at everything at a glance.

- To browse websites like lanyrd.com is not a bad option. This website collects a lot of events and lets you share them on Twitter. The app is designed to offer you events following the events that your Twitter contacts will be attending.
Also have a look at eventbrite.co.uk. It's the most common platform to book tickets online, so you can find thousands of events there.

- Check the activities that are taking place in your favourite galleries, studios, associations, magazines, design shops…

As I said sometime before, if you want to expand your design-geek circle you must attend as many activities as you can. Another important thing to do is to advertise your presence in the event online: twitter, facebook, etc. -although on many occasions I found that the place where the event is taking place did not have any reception-  this will help you to find more people with whom to share the experience… In most of the events you can interact with people even if you don't know each other in person only because you just kept in touch via Twitter before. So it may be a good excuse to introduce yourself face to face, isn't it?

Attending all the activities related to design enriches and teaches a lot but if you really want to get the most from these activities you should try to talk to people and introduce yourself. Normally you don't have so many times where you can share your passion for design apart from with your colleagues, some designer friends and some interviews that you can have. Remember, that events and other activities like that normally are quite informal (which does not happen in an interview, for example), in which you can truly be yourself.

Engaging in conversations with people can bring you many advantages, you never know… if they already know you in person perhaps they will feel interested in knowing what you do. So it's worth reminding them by adding them to your social networks or sending them an email. Who knows if in the future they will remember you for something...
